Dear Believers in North America,

I.M.A.M. has been trying to gather reports and data about moon sightings. The following has been established in regards to the 1st day of Shawal (Eid al-Fitr) for the followers of Sayyid al-Seestani:

Those who reside in the Southern Part of the United States of America
1. Based on sightings by believers in Orlando and Tampa, we conclude the southern part of the United States of America (Orlando, Tampa, and the cities sharing the same horizon) should celebrate Saturday the 13th of October 2007 as the 1st of Shawal.

Those who reside in the Northern Part of the United States of America & Canada
2. Based on the astronomical data which indicate that the possibilities of  sighting the crescent are very weak and the lack of any sighting reports in northern part of the United States of America (Detroit and cities sharing the same horizon) and Canada, we discussed the situation with the Lead Scholar of the Edicts Committee of the Office of Sayyid al-Seestani, Hojat al-Islam Sayyid Mohsin al-Hashimi.

Based on the discussions he related the position of his eminence Grand Aytollah Sayyid al-Seestani that for those residing in the northern part of the United States and Canada the 1st of Shawal should be Sunday the 14th of October 2007.

* A note to all believers in the Northern part of the United States of America, if they want to break their fast they should travel the distance required and make up the day.
