Announcement Regarding the Possibilities of Sighting of the New Crescent for the Holy Month of Ramadan

To all the Believers,

Peace & blessings upon you
We would like to bring to your attention the following:
·         Based on the principle of “multiple curve sightings” and since the astronomical data in regards to the possibilities of sighting the New Crescent of the Month of Ramadan for the year 1429 at sunset on Sunday August 31st 2008 in North America, are very low and do not provide certainty, it’s more likely that Holy Month of Ramadan will start on September 2nd 2008 for those who follow his Eminence Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sistani (may Allah prolong his life) and most of the other jurists.
·         Based on the principle of “sharing of the night” and since the astronomical data in regards to the possibilities of sighting the New Crescent are high at sunset on Sunday in SouthAmerica, for those who can still follow the late Grand Ayatollah Sayyid al-Khoei (may Allah bless his soul),  it is more likely that the Holy Month of Ramadan will start on September 1st, 2008 if there is a confirmation of sightings of the New Crescent in South America based on the a legal (religious) standards, since North America shares the same night with South America.
These results will be confirmed through the announcement of the “Crescent Committee” of the Council of Muslim Shia Scholars in North America which will be issued late in the evening on Sunday August 31st.
