Regarding the Saudi statements directed toward the Marjaeya

May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon both of you,
It is no secret from your Excellencies, nor from the remaining officials in the Saudi Arabian Kingdom, that the recent vile and inappropriate statements by Shaykh Al-Ureifi about the Shia Muslims, the Followers of Ahl-ul-Bayt and of the Prophet, and the Supreme Religious Authority of the Muslims, His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Hussaini al-Sistani (may God prolong his life), during his speech on Friday the 15th of Muharram, and the despicable caricature in al-Watan Newspaper published on Monday the 22nd of Muharram have enraged the emotions and anger of every sound-minded and conscious individual – not to mention the Muslims among them, especially the followers of His Eminence worldwide. Our sole response to those acts is the words of the Exalted, “O you who have faith! Be wary of Allah, and speak upright words. He shall rectify your conduct for you and He shall forgive you your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His Apostle has certainly achieved a great success.” (al-Quran 33:70-71). We address you as the representative of your Kingdom, which is honored by the Holy Ka’bah – a point of unity for all Muslims and those who pray, in this country. You also represent his Majesty King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, whose history is replete with initiatives to repair the rifts in the Arab and Muslim worlds and with issues pertaining to dialogue and interfaith relations.

The Crescent Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announces the verified sighting of the crescent moon in several areas of North America after sunset on Thursday 17 December 2009. As a result, Friday December 18, 2009, will be the first day of the month of Muharram for the year 1431 A.H. Accordingly, the day of Ashura in which we commemorate the Master of Martyrs, Imam Husain (peace be upon him), will be on Sunday December 27, 2009.

We would like to inform you that the Crescent Committee has conducted the appropriate investigations, through the help of its members and many scholars and preachers from different areas – especially the areas in which there was indeed a possibility of sighting the crescent, although the possibilities of sighting were minimum. The committee reported no cases of sighting the crescent by the sunset of Saturday, September 19th in North America.

(Quran 55:26-27), With great sadness and sorrow, this morning we received news of the departure of a great man of struggle, his eminence Hujjatul Islam wal Muslimeen, Sayyid Abul Aziz al-Hakim – leader of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq – who passed away as a result of the illness which he had been suffering from for some time.

Announcement Regarding the New Crescent of The Holy Month of Ramadhan 1430

The Crescent Committee of the Council of the Shia Muslim Scholars in North America makes the following announcement regarding the new crescent of the Holy Month of Ramadhan 1430:
The new crescent was reportedly sighted in several regions of the world at sunset on Friday, August 21st, 2009. As for the United States and Canada most regions were cloudy.
Therefore, based on the following two points:
• His Eminence Grand Ayatullah Sayyid Sistani's opinion is: “The sighting of the new crescent in any region establishes the possibility of its sighting--had there been no barriers--in regions located to its west, as long as they are not too distant in latitude.”
• He has mentioned the following condition in his verdict (see the link): "the standard for the attainment of a sense of assurance should be through the correlation of 'the size and the altitude of the new crescent' in the region where the new crescent is sighted to other regions.”
Saturday, August 22nd, 2009 is the first day of the month of Ramadhan for anyone who attains a sense of assurance based on the above criteria.
It is worth mentioning for those still following the Late Grand Ayatullah Sayyid al-Khoei that the 1st of the Month of Ramadhan will be on Saturday in all of North America.
We Ask Allah to accept all our deeds and worships in this Holy Month.
