[Dearborn, MI] IMAM was honored to host another great scholar from Najaf, His Excellency, Sayyid Mohammed Ali Bahr al-Uloom
By news @ 8:00 AM :: 897 Views

On June 3, 2011, IMAM was honored to host another great scholar from Najaf, His Excellency, Sayyid Mohammed Ali Bahr al-Uloom. IMAM invited around 50 dignitaries, scholars, presidents of organizations and Islamic centers in the Detroit Metropolitan Area for a breakfast, to welcome the respected scholar. After introducing His Eminence, Sayyid Bahr al-Uloom addressed the attendees. The first point he brought up was about the importance of leaders and their role in connecting their respective communities to the Grand Jurists. The second point addressed the issue of citizenship and involvement with other communities. Historically, the Shia worked mainly outside of the government due to the circumstances of the time. However, today, our Grand Jurists advise the Shia, especially those living in western countries, to practice their religion through citizenship and adhere to the contract, which was agreed upon when entering or living in the country. He added that based on this we don't see any contradiction between our faith and and the country we live in, so the Shia have the freedom to practice their religion while also keeping their noble culture. That is why it is important for leaders and centers to develop their communities in such a way that does not isolate them from other communities. Thirdly, Sayyid Bahr al-Uloom emphasized the importance of collaborating between centers and organizations. He gave the example of the four Grand Jurists in Najaf collaborating on the occasion of the Eid when it fell on different days. The last main point that he addressed was that the Islamic centers are not only for the Shia to benefit from. They are meant for all human beings. He split the focus of the message into three perspectives. On one level, our centers focus on teaching and benefiting the Shia community. On a second level, as we broaden our message, we speak to the entire Muslim community. On a third level, when we broaden our message even more, we address all of humanity. Other faith traditions can only speak about their own respective faiths, but as Shia, we can speak on all three levels, addressing specifically Shia issues as well as general issues that benefit all of humanity.
